Apple Picking

Early November is the tail end of apple season in the Blue Ridge, but you can still get good pickin's. Hickory Nut Gap Farm is a working mountain farm in Fairview with a farm store, fresh-pressed cider, and fall weekend hayrides. For u-pick, head to Hendersonville (NC's apple capital) where 20+ orchards line the hills — Jeter Mountain Farm offers 25+ apple varieties across 400 acres. Call ahead to confirm picking availability.

Kuwohi Observation Tower

Pictured twice on this site, Kuwohi is the third tallest peak east of the Mississippi and the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains -- and it sits right on the Appalachian Trail! The 1.3-mile hike to the tower is short and steep, but you can be rewarded with a 360° panorama view of the Smokies. Highly recommend doing a sunrise hike on a clear morning. November may be past peak fall colors, but the views are jaw-dropping any time. Feeling ambitious? Continue 1.5 miles down Forney Ridge Trail to Andrews Bald, a sweeping grassy bald with open mountain views.
